The game didn’t incentivise me to experiment any further with the combat, so I found myself routinely using the same attacks to get the job done, making each enemy encounter feel repetitive.Īs if these puzzles weren’t easy enough already, the game holds your hands during most segments of the game. While all of this sounds in-depth, in execution it feels pretty shallow. This is an admittedly novel concept, but in execution, the correct answer is far too obvious and leads to an overly long cut-scene simply to activate this ability. There’s also a “Huddle” move, which gathers all of the Guardians and buffs all of their attacks depending on the correct dialogue box being chosen. As Star-Lord, you primarily use your guns to attack enemies from afar, as well as use elemental attacks to break the barriers from said enemies. In combat, they provide their own set of unique attacks, ranging from Groot’s tree roots trapping enemies, to Gemora’s devastating sword dealing immense damage to whoever she unleashes her attacks on. The characters also serve unique purposes during the gameplay. These moments can be enjoyable in short spurts, but when the game is chock-full of these gimmicks at every turn, it comes across as self-indulgent. What started off as entertaining banter quickly turned into flat-out annoyance, making me dislike most characters in the game. There are a lot of conflicts between each character, to the point where most scenes consist of constant back-and-forth arguments between them. This is especially true for Rocket, who I believe is the most unlikeable character in the entire game. However, what makes this a legitimate issue is simply the way in which each character interacts with each other. There’s not a single scene where there’s not a character talking, meaning there was never a moment where I could take in the sights of a new planet. There’s so many conversations between the characters that it can become overbearing at times. It’s here where you meet the rest of the familiar cast, including Gemora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot.Įach character has their own personality that makes them stand out, and it’s clear that their dialogue and interactions were one of the main focuses behind this game.
